Your Problem Considered
Pain, and the resulting loss of normal activity, is the number one reason why people seek the help of a doctor of chiropractic. The causes of painful and sometimes debilitating complaints, however, are many and varied.

The initial job at hand is to determine the underlying cause of the patient’s symptoms, and that inquiry begins with a thorough case history.

  • Have you ever had this before?
  • Can you point to something which may have caused this?
  • How long have you had this symptom?
  • What is the nature of the pain (dull, achy, sharp and stabbing, or burning?)
  • How frequently do you feel the pain (occasionally, frequently, or constantly?)
  • What aggravates the problem, and what relieves it?
  • Are there radiating symptoms (pain that travels, numbness or tingling?)

In this office, the history would be followed by a chiropractic examination, including:

  • Range of motion (how is the patient bending and twisting?)
  • Orthopedic testing (what specific tests reproduce the pain in question?)
  • Neurological testing (reflexes, strength and sensation.)
  • Postural examination (does the patient exhibit good alignment?)
  • Gait (how does the patient move?)
  • Palpation (what areas are painful or tense to the touch?)

In some cases it may be determined that x-rays or other diagnostic testing would be appropriate. We utilize area imaging facilities if indicated. It also may be determined that referral to another specialty may be indicated once all the information is reviewed.

An initial report of findings would normally follow the history/examination. At this time we would attempt to successfully answer the following questions:

  • What is my problem?
  • Is my case amenable to a chiropractic approach?
  • What kind of treatment is indicated?
  • How long will this take and how frequently must I come?
  • How much will it cost? This question would certainly consider your insurance benefits, if any, including deductibles and copays, and will be clear upfront what your responsibility will be.

A treatment plan would likely include home care instructions (suggestions such as ice, heat, rest and proper exercises.) Patients in this office are never pressured to accept recommendations.
